Some childhoods shape a life. Others shape a calling. Muriel Elmer's did both.
Raised in colonial Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) as the daughter of missionaries, Muriel's childhood was marked by both profound loss and extraordinary resilience. After the early death of her father, she was raised by her mother in a close-knit African community whose love, strength, and traditions would shape the course of her life. Those early experiences inspired a lifelong passion for understanding how people learn, connect, and flourish across cultures.
Muriel earned her PhD from Michigan State University and went on to teach graduate and doctoral students in educational studies and intercultural studies at Trinity International University. Throughout her career, she also taught nursing and intercultural communication, consulted with international organizations, and trained leaders serving around the world.
Her work has always lived at the intersection of scholarship and service. As a training specialist with World Relief, she helped strengthen child survival programs and equip humanitarian workers. Together with her husband, Duane, she later returned to southern Africa as missionaries, bringing her life's journey full circle.
Muriel is the co-author of The Learning Cycle, which draws on neuroscience, educational psychology, and Christian principles to explore how people grow in both knowledge and character. She has also contributed to publications on intercultural development, education, and global leadership.
In Night of the Fireflies, Muriel turns her gifts as a teacher and storyteller toward the story she has carried all her life. With warmth, honesty, and vivid storytelling, she invites readers into a childhood marked by beauty, heartbreak, adventure, and enduring faith.
